Cedar Labs demonstrates seamless migration of data from SIF to Generate in the cloud

by Cedar Labs, on Aug 12, 2022 3:00:00 PM

Minneapolis, MN: In an effort to support the open source community’s implementation of Generate for federal reporting, Cedar Labs, with support from the Center for Integration of IDEA Data (CIID) and the Iowa Department of Education, demonstrated the alignment between the SIF data standard and Generate federal reporting, while also pioneering the implementation of Generate in the cloud. Cedar Labs currently provides a cloud-native platform for state reporting across Iowa’s public and non-public schools, utilizing the SIF standard. Our goal was to tap into this existing infrastructure and demonstrate that, because SIF and CEDS are already aligned with common vocabulary, implementation of Generate for federal reporting would be greatly simplified. In a matter of weeks, the team was able to implement Generate in the cloud for the first time, connect to the existing data infrastructure, and recreate several reports suitable for submission. The three organizations recently presented on this project at the Stats DC virtual conference - more information is available here (version with alternate text available here).

About Iowa Department of Education: Through leadership and service to the state education system, the Iowa Department of Education works to ensure all students are ready for college and career training and receive the postsecondary support they need to succeed. The Department provides oversight to the state education system that includes public elementary and secondary schools, nonpublic schools that receive state accreditation, area education agencies, community colleges, and teacher preparation programs.

About CIID: The Center for the Integration of IDEA Data (CIID) provides technical assistance to state education agencies (SEAs) to increase the capacity to report high quality data required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part B Sections 616 and 618. CIID supports the integration of IDEA data systems and processes with the statewide longitudinal data system (SLDS). CIID is working directly with SEAs to resolve the challenges associated with fragmented IDEA, SLDS and EDFacts data management practices and data systems architecture. When IDEA data are fully integrated into the SLDS, SEAs will be able to more efficiently complete federal data reporting and have higher quality IDEA data to inform decision-making for improved educational outcomes.
